The Town of Stark Highway Department has been working on keeping the Town of Stark’s town roads in good shape for the public to travel. The roads completed this year included Park Road, Apple Lane, Christmas Tree Hill Road, R. Smith Road, Primrose Lane and Cemetery Road. There is now new signs on Cemetery Road from Jordanville Road heading East. Cemetery Road is now a dead-end road and will be open to local traffic only in the east direction. Cemeterey Road will end at Apple Lane as a two lane road and there will be signs identifying the end of two-way traffic. From Route 80 to the west, the Cemeterey Road will be one lane and one way from the Van Hornesville Cemetery to Apple Lane. This move was necessary as the road isn't wide enough to support two-lane traffic in the summer time. This portion of the road is seasonal in the winter and has been for many years. The seasonal road receives no maintenance from November 1 to April 1 and is closed to all traffic during the winter.
The Town Board has received notice the Volvo truck ordered by the Town Board a year ago, has been scheduled for assembly by the middle of October, 2024. Cost for the Volvo truck is approxmately $336,000.00, including snow plow equpment and sander. Payment will be with a Bond Anticipation Note (BAN) issued through NBT Bank, the Town's lending institution. Repayments will be made over a 5-year period with first payment due in 2025. As was mentioned in last years newsletter, the Town of Stark has ordered a new Mack 10-wheel dump truck equipped with snow fighting apparatus. Delivery of the Mack truck is expected in 2025. This truck has been on order for over three years. The Town recently purchased a used single axel truck with a plow, wing and sander from the Town of Mohawk in Montgomery County. The cost of the vehicle was $13,000.00 and was paid from 2022 unexpended fund balance in the Highway Department. The Town sold some un-used equipment at Auctions International to help defray the cost of the used vehicle.
The Town has applied for a $500,000.00 grant to construct a sand/salt barn for the Highway Department to store the town and county sand pile undercover. This building will help to prevent run-off from the sand pile into nearby streams. Cost of the facility is approximately $560,600.00. The style building is a Britespan offered by Eagle Associates of Cazenovia, LLC. The total cost of construction is to be paid up-front before reimbursement is made to the Town in the form of a grant. The Town will find out if we are successful with our grant application in November. Jerry Stucchi of JGK Associates in Schuyler assisted the Town in writing the grant application. If the Town is successful, we would be in line for $500,000.00 for the cost of site plan review, land preparation and purchase, construction material, equipment rental and labor associated with the total cost of the project.
